Linkbait is a popular term among internet marketers. It’s not always a good thing, but it’s not completely evil either. If you have a blog, read on to find out whether you know how to use linkbait or not.
What is Linkbait?
Linkbait is any blog post or article that can compel people to react. As the term implies, an article with a linkbait compels people to link back to your blog or website. Because people love communicating through the internet, people do more than just comment on your blog post. If your blog post is interesting enough, people cannot help but say something about it on twitter, facebook etc.. Linkbait is nothing more or less than written content that attracts a buzz, comments and, above all, links.
So, is linkbaiting a good thing?
Whether or not linkbait is good depends on how you use it. Good linkbaits are those that interest and provoke your target audience, like something on sex ed on a parenting blog. A bad linkbait is something that could damage your credibility, like a rant or an article flaming other people. But some people will argue that linkbait, no matter what kind of reaction it incites, is good.
Ready to Write Your First Linkbait?
There are certain types of articles that naturally attract attention. How-to guides with high value content can wow people. Controversial opinion articles that tackle a new angle are always popular. Articles that ‘expose’ something are always effective, but posting these could mean trouble.
Inflammatory pieces are the baser end of the “controversy” scale. Just look at the way tabloids sell their stories.
If you’re still confused, here’s a rule I use when linkbaiting… never post something that you cannot stand up for.
Give and You Shall Receive
Link love is one of the most common types of linkbaits. The act of linking to another blogger’s post can also drive traffic to your blog. In addition, there are some blogging platforms that automatically place the link to your “reaction” post under the article you linked to.
A blog is an interaction with other people. Your website will attract a certain audience. For a blog to be popular, you must command the attention of all these people. Being a blogger, you should always write posts that other people can proudly share on other sites. Imagine yourself talking to your audience when writing linkbaits.
